WHAT IS A WCWC BOOK PAIRING?

A WCWC Book Pairing combines a book review with a wine tasting and food pairing. The event is hosted at a WCWC member's residence, or a local lounge/restaurant. The host is called the Event Host and is responsible for hosting the group or arranging the venue to have the event at. The selected Wine Steward is responsible for collecting the appropriate wines for tasting. Attending members are encouraged to bring one of the Potential Tapas for Pairing. The book is selected by a consensus vote of the WCWC members. The wine and food all relate to the book's topic or culture.

  • AUGUST WINES TO TASTE

This month we will select 3 wines from the San Ynez Valley near Santa Barbara. Two of these wines are made with Pinot clones and one is made from an original Pinot rootstock. Let's see if we can tell the difference and if the difference is actually good.

Also Note: Foxen and Sanford were 2 of the wineries in the Sideways book and movie.  Cambria is another Santa Ynez winery that has a special place in my heart.

Cambria - Pinot Noir: Clone 2A
Foxen - Pinot Noir: Bien Nacido Vineyard - Block 8
Sanford - 2007 Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir

  • AUGUST BOOK TO REVIEW

This month's book is Sideways by Rex Pickett.  The book has a many fun twists on a friendship along with a peek into the mind of someone that thinks they know wine.

From Publisher's Weekly (and Amazon), "Two old friends set out for a weeklong romp through Santa Ynez, Calif., wine country that comically strains their friendship in Pickett's lively debut."

  • POTENTIAL TAPAS FOR PAIRING

The book itself doesn't lend itself to food on their travels, but based on the wine and the region I think these treats would do well.

Pinot Noir is a delicate grape that produces a fruity wine that is less tannic than other wines. It has many different styles from different world regions.  The same grape makes CĂ´te d'Or wine in France and Spätburgunder in Germany. These light and expressive grapes have the widest food pairing range working well with meaty fish, to robust duck, to sausages and game meats.  The sampling below should be able to give a good representation of how these wines pair with food.

    - Seared Duck Breast with Cherries & Port Sauce
    - Bacon Wrapped Goat Cheese
    - Chicken/Sausage Kabobs
    - Tomato/Asparagus/Corn/Pepper Salad
    - Porcini Parmesan Risotto
